Zoë Laureen Palmer
Biography
Zoe Palmer FRSA is a writer, opera-maker and environmentalist who is passionate about social justice and the transformative power of the arts. She is currently delivering the Royal College of Music’s research project Music and Motherhood: investigating the effects of music on postnatal depression. She is co-Creator of Musical Rumpus, an opera series which has played to over 6,000 young children and families across the UK and abroad in venues including Saffron Hall, Rich Mix, Stratford Circus and Royal Opera House. In 2008 she founded The Golden Company – an award winning enterprise that works to improve the wellbeing of young people 16-21 through interaction with nature in urban areas. In 2014 she was shortlisted for an Observer Ethical Award – the company currently employs 15 young people on three stalls in Borough Market. Her presenting credits include Treks in a Wild World for National Geographic, Globetrekker for Discovery and Fierce Earth on CBBC. She has contributed to a number of publications on the subjects of feminine leadership and narratives of climate change. She holds an MSc in Human Ecology, BSc in Anthropology and Post Graduate Diploma in Creative Leadership. Other interests include diving (she is PADI qualified), horse riding, canoeing, trekking and samba. Globe Trekker is an adventure tourism television series produced by Pilot Productions. The British series was inspired by the Lonely Planet travelbooks and began airing in 1994. Globe Trekker is broadcast in over 40 countries across six continents. Each episode features a host, called a traveller, who travels with a camera crew to a country—often, a relatively exotic locale—and experiences the sights, sounds, and culture that the location has to offer. Special episodes feature in-depth city, beach, dive, shopping, history, festival, and food guides. The show often goes far beyond popular tourist destinations in order to give viewers a more authentic look at local culture. Presenters usually participate in different aspects of regional life, such as attending a traditional wedding or visiting a mining community. They address the viewer directly, acting as tourists-turned-tour guides, but are also filmed interacting with locals and discovering interesting locations in unrehearsed sequences. Globe Trekker also sometimes includes brief interviews with backpackers who share tips on independent travel in that particular country.
