
Mary Niall Mitchell
Biography
Dr. Mary Niall Mitchell is a professor of history with interests in early American history, New Orleans studies, race, slavery and emancipation in the U.S. South, visual culture, Antebellum South and digital humanities. Mitchell gained her Ph.D. in 2001 from New York University, which later published her book, 'Raising Freedom's Child: Black Children and Visions of the Future after Slavery' (2008). Mitchell has written articles for the New York Times Disunion blog, Harper’s Magazine, The Atlantic, and Commonplace. Mitchell is involved in 'Freedom on the Move', a project to collect and rediscover stories of fugitives from American slavery.
